Our Mission

To provide services and support to our Property Owners and enhance
their enjoyment of the facilities of Shadow Lakes. This web site was
created as an additional effort to communicate with our Association
Members on important issues that impact the continued development of our
community. We will strive to make improvements in the site and encourage
suggestions, from our owners, that will aid in this goal. |

Shadow Lakes Resort is located 55 miles Southwest of
Chicago, 1 1/2 miles South of Route I-55 off Coal City Road and Illinois Route 129, in the City of Braidwood,
Illinois, in Will County. You will note that our mailing address, however, is Wilmington, IL 60481 because we are in the Wilmington
ZIP code area.
We are surrounded by Sportsmen's and Recreation Clubs. The Des Plaines
Conservation Area, Kankakee, Illinois, and Des Plaines Rivers are close
by.

History of the Development
|
Shadow Lakes comprises 640 acres of former coal mining
strip pits. It's development began in 1985 and now includes four
distinctive sections; Explorer's Village, Fisherman's
Village, Tully Monster Village, and Fossil Cove Village.
New additions are underway in Lighthouse Cove, a 96 unit town-home
development, and Board Walk Bay, a 30 unit development of custom homes. You can view early photos of Shadow
Lakes on our Photo Album page.
We recently discovered that there was a deep tunnel coal
mine within the boundaries of Shadow Lakes. It was located North of the Amenity Center parking lot, next to the playground.
The mine owners sold the property in 1928, to the Northern Illinois Strip Mining Company, who began the strip
mining of what is now Shadow Lakes. You can see a photo of the old mine buildings, merged over the current
site, on our Photo Album page. Since that discovery, an ISGS map shows two more mine locations that
we are trying to obtain more information on. There are thirty nine deep shaft mines, in or near, the City of Braidwood
dating from 1864 to 1928.
